Many people drink for a toast or for a social occasion. But many people drink excessively which is a whole different ball game. Excessive drinking can take a toll on your everyday life. Many college students binge drink and this is not good.
The social and emotional damage alcohol can do can be dramatic. Alcohol is a depressant and often causes more problems for the abuser. Many people are killed each year from excessive use of alcohol. And the physical damage caused to your body can be irreversible.
When you drink alcohol it is absorbed through the stomach making its way through the bloodstream and into all the tissue. How it effects you can depend on factors such as weight, age, sex and what you had to eat before drinking.
The mild and moderate effects of alcohol are usually seen more socially. Yu may become less inhibited talking more or louder. You may also get a little dizzy, what many call a buzz. Excessive use is more physical. Slurred speech, impaired physical ability, vomiting and sleep disturbance.
After a night out on the town and a few too many drinks you are likely to have a hangover. A hangover can keep you in bed all day with a headache, body aches and nausea. Not the way anybody wants to spend an afternoon.
Alcoholism is a very serious problem and can be debilitating to the abuser. When an abuser quits drinking they can suffer horrible withdraws just like any drug. Tremors and anxiety are 2 of the milder symptoms. More severe withdraws can be hallucinations and convulsions.
For those who have abused alcohol for prolonged periods of time they could be doing irreversible damage to vital organs such as the brain and the liver. Drinking while pregnant can cause fetal alcohol syndrome. Fetal Alcohol syndrome can cause mental retardation and physical deformations.
I hope that by knowing the facts and what all drinking alcohol can do to you both physically and emotionally that you can make a wise decisions about drinking. It is best to limit alcohol consumption to a minimum and not at all if you are at risk for abusing.
