Romantic Movies Off Limits In Your House? Make Him Laugh And Snuggle At The Same Time!

by Guest Author

Serious subjects and romance don't go together in our house, or in most homes from what I'm hearing people say. Couples that laugh together are happy, and happy couples tend to get sort of cozy, if you know what I'm talking about.

I know my husband does not want to sit around, sniffling like a baby, while we're watching some tear-jerker. The idea of spending a romantic evening together doesn't start with watching a movie that will tear our hearts out. If I came home with some miserable, sad movie, that happened to have a love story in it somewhere, the romantic evening planned for the two of us would come to a crushing halt. Ladies, I've listed four movies here that are definitely in the Don't-Even-Think-About-Making-Him-Watch-That category.

1) The Notebook - If you know this movie, you know what I'm saying. If you don't know the movie, well it's a wife with alzheimers and a husband who's devoted to her. REALLY devoted to her. 'Nuff said? Spoiler alert... they die together in each other's arms in the end. Boo hoo. A definite buzz kill if ever there was one for a happy evening at home.

2) Closer - Even though this movie has heavy-hitters like Natalie Portman, Julie Roberts, and Jude Law, they don't make up for the sad plot twists. Beautiful "exotic dancer" gets run over by car, witnessed by man who becomes attracted to her, at first, but then moves on to another beautiful woman. They are in love, that is until she marries somebody else, which actually doesn't stop them from being "in love" all over the place. Then, what about the beautiful stripper who still loves the man? Just too sad all around for a nice, romantic night.

3) A Walk To Remember - Ladies, rent this to watch with your girlfriends and a couple dozen bottles of wine. Your man will not appreciate the tender moments or the tragic event that sparks a whole lot of sad stuff. Is there redemption at the end? Who cares when you're trying to cuddle up with your man! Look for some laughs elsewhere.

4) The Bridges Of Madison County - Okay, ladies, you can NOT even bring this movie up if you are serious about having some romance with your man. Just the thought alone of this movie is enough to make most men want to curl up and cry. Married woman, torn between her husband and lover... I mean, come on, what red blooded male would find that scenario in the least romantic, or funny? No laughs here, at all, and that means no happy man!

Yes, your man loves you and yes he will choke up at some sentimental things, but when it comes to movie-time and play-time, he needs a couple belly laughs, ladies. Let's see what's out there that has a comfortable combination of romance and laughs. You CAN have both, but you just have to temper the romance a bit, and avoid the sorrow! Here's a short list of movies that always bring smiles to my man, and me! Here are four Just-Sit-Back-Laugh-And-Enjoy movies.

1) Dan In Real Life - Funny movies that you can relate to are always a plus. Steve Carell seems like he could be your neighbor, or even yourself. He's, well, real. He plays a widower, which although is sad, is not the focus of the movie. After some time of being alone and lonely, he meets a wonderful woman, quite by accident, while he's on his way to a big family reunion. Sparks ignite, he's a happy man. Until he meets his brother's girlfriend. Oops... same woman. They keep it on the q.t., but of course things have to go awry eventually. Great fights, lots of laughs, some family issues, good characters, and the beautiful Juliette Binoche bring this movie all together. Nice way to spend a night alone with your man. Good laughs, good love.

2) The Holiday - The premise is that two lovely women, Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, do a Holiday house switch to get the heck away from love-gone-wrong. Learning to live in totally different worlds, they start to fall into all sorts of situations, which of course involve romance. Jude Law and Jack Black are great love-interests, that provide lots of smiles and enough sexy co-mingling to keep your man's interest. You are even treated to a Hollywood star played by Eli Wallach, who has been forgotten, but gets reacquainted with the world with the help of Kate Winslet. This storyline is very touching, but also funny. The characters will make you laugh and will tug at your heartstrings a bit. Your man should be feeling all warm and cozy after this movie!

3) Hitch - Will Smith is very relaxed and funny in this "match making" farce. He plays a "date coordinator" who will teach a guy how to make an impression on a woman that will last long enough to at least get them to a second and third date. But, his own advice is falling short when it comes to his life. Funnier than you might think and with enough sentimental co-mingling for you, too.

4) Click - Although this movie has a couple moments of darkness, the characters, played by Adam Sandler and the beautiful Kate Beckinsale, really outshine the few weighty moments. Hey, it's about life in a marriage, there's got to be SOME weighty moments! Adam Sandler is given a remote control by none other than Christopher Walken, who's character is incredibly outrageous. We soon learn that the "clicker" controls life. Now wouldn't that be handy, you say. If you're like most people trying to manage a family-life, you know how sometimes you would really like to fast-forward, rewind, pause, or mute the scene going on around you. Good message-movie, but loaded with laughs. You and your man will truly appreciate the laughs you can share watching this movie family go through many of the same things we all go through, and then some!

It's good to laugh, especially when you're spending time alone with your man. Pick a night to share a funny, and touching, movie, curl up in front of the television, laugh a little and cuddle a lot!
