Myths have always shrouded hypnosis and its healing arm, hypnotherapy. Some consider them to be black magic whereas others reject them as pseudo science. Some of the popular misconceptions associated with hypnosis and the truth behind them are given below.
Hypnosis has nothing to do with black magic of any kind. It is a very simple technique, which can be explained without much difficulty with the help of psychology and other scientific methods. The authenticity of hypnosis is doubted even by individuals who have watched it casting its spell on subjects. They say that hypnotised subjects allow practitioners to perform well in their art by not displaying enough will power to withstand the influence of their words. But nothing could be more distant from the truth. Hypnosis can in fact work on people who are mentally strong and are trying their best to block the spell.
Another notion about hypnosis that people have made up arbitrarily is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A person under hypnosis does not get segregated from the outside world, but remains completely conscious of the goings on around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes completely and is hence able to focus fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.
Another myth, which has been propagated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can be applied on merely 5% of humans. Although, the research has some element of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the researchers made use of the same hypnosis procedure for everyone. Hypnosis can't be oversimplified like that and works only if there are different methodologies for different characters.
People also tend to associate hypnosis with meditation. However, meditation is a purely personal experience that has got nothing to do with communication, while communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, while the very basis of the hypnosis technique is communication.
Another myth is that bodily and behavioural alterations in an individual are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis certainly cannot alter the body in abnormal ways. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by altering behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.
Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a significant role to play in the well-being of a person, and not trying them out just because of some misconceptions is an act of folly.
