If you have ever spent any time at all in a garden (your own or another persons) then you know that flower gardens bring joy and tranquility. They are very soothing to be around. In fact, I would go so far to say that being in a garden is one of my very favorite spots to be in. Here are some steps in making your garden really pop!
Pay attention to the plants.
Perennial gardens are great. They take a little more money upfront to get established, but because your plants come back year after year, you will find that they will reward you for many years to come. When establishing a perennial bed you want to make sure you get plants suited for your zone, as well as ones that will bloom at different times of the season.
This is not as hard as it sounds. Shopping at a local nursery will pretty much ensure that you get perennials that are hardy for your area of the country, and just looking at the labels will tell you the bloom times.
If you would rather not do all that work, a good alternative is to buy a premade garden map. These maps are created by zone, and will tell you exactly what plants to buy and where to put them. They make laying out a garden super easy.
Add hardscaping elements.
When you are planting a garden it is easy to get focused on just the plants, but adding other elements can really make your personality shine.
Use pathways, garden fences, and garden statues in order to get really great effect from your plants. You can easily do an Asian inspired theme with some polished river rock, a Buddha, and some carefully chosen plants. Or you can achieve a cottage look with white picket edging and a garden statue of children at play paired with a nice assortment of cottage perennials.
Don't forget to water.
In my climate in Indiana watering my garden is a must, especially in July and August. If it hasn't rained for 3 days it is a good time to water your garden. The easiest way is to lay a soaker hose in your garden bed and simply attach your garden hose to it and let it go for an hour or two.
